Rookie Day

What is Rookie Day?

Rookie Day at Camp Chateaugay is a special event designed to introduce potential new campers and their families to the camp environment, staff, and activities. We always encourage families to visit and experience Chateaugay for themselves, and there’s no better time than Rookie Day. Here’s what you can typically expect:

Welcome and Orientation: The day starts with a warm welcome from the camp counselors and staff, who provide a brief overview of the camp’s rules, schedule, safety protocols, and emergency procedures.

Icebreakers and Games: Fun icebreaker activities and games help everyone get to know each other. These activities help new campers feel more comfortable and start making friends.

Camp Tour: Parents are given a full tour of the camp, including the cabins, dining hall, activity areas, and other important facilities. After the tour, parents are free to explore the local area, such as Malone, Plattsburgh, and Montreal.

Activity Sampling: Campers are paired with counselors who guide them through three different camp activities in the morning and two in the afternoon. As they move from activity to activity, the counselor points out key facilities like arts and crafts, sports, and swimming, helping campers get a feel for what they might want to participate in during their stay.

Meet the Staff: Parents and campers are introduced to the counselors and other key staff members, helping build rapport and making it easier for campers to ask questions and seek help if needed.

Lunch and Social Time: At 12:30, campers will have lunch with the rest of the camp, offering more opportunities for socializing and getting comfortable in the camp environment.

Team-Building Activities: After lunch, campers have a one-hour rest period with activities designed to build teamwork and cooperation. They are paired with a bunk of similar-aged campers, helping them feel more integrated into the camp community. This is also a time for a Q&A session, allowing potential campers to ask questions about the camp experience, schedule, or activities.

Overall, Rookie Day is all about easing new campers into the camp experience, making them feel welcome, and setting them up for a fun and successful summer.

Rookie Day in Summer ’25 is on August 2nd 2025
